Twats of Blackburn Buchanan & Bailey
In 2022 Daniel Thwaites Plc’s bosses were again left red-facedsee original when they learned what their employees Andrew Buchanan and Rick Bailey had got up to in March 2022. For those of you that don’t know, Andrew Buchanan is the director of Pubs and Brewing and Richard Bailey is the Chief Executive Officer. What happened was Andrew had to approve payment of 5 outstanding invoices from one of Thwaites creditors and the total amount owing was £1,045. But instead he decided to instruct one of his staff to phone the Creditor and give them an ultimatum either accept £760 as payment in full for all 5 invoices or none of the invoices would be paid. The employee then did as instructed but the Creditor refused to accept the ultimatum. Some days later the Creditor wrote to Rick Bailey explaining what had transpired in the hope he would intervene and overrule Andrew’s decision but, in his written response he stated that as the offer had been rejected then as far as he was concerned the matter was closed. It is now the 11th September 2025 and to date those invoices have still not been paid but the invoice total has now mushroomed to £94,695.00.

Thwaites hotels are awful.
I booked two rooms to treat my Mum to a night away. We had our rooms beside each other & upon entrance of the room I was instantly disappointed. The decor & furnishings are so tired & dated, the walls had marks all over them in various places, the bathroom shower tiles are in serious need of new grouting & the marble sink is discolored & stained, not what I expect to see when paying for a 4 * hotel! The bar service is a joke, waiting half an hour for our drinks to be brought over to us.

Awful night's sleep at the Cottons Hotel.
The noise in bedroom 300 from the heating or plumbing sounded like a jet taking of at times. woke me in the night several times.

How this hotel is rated 4 stars by the AA is beyond me
The room was not soundproofed, constant flow of noisy traffic throughout the night Noise from above room became increasingly intolerable. The bath didn't drain properly because the plughole was full of hairs. The toilet was filthy. We tried to make a formal complaint at reception but was told there were no complaint forms, etc..

Lovely food.
Myself and my partner went for a meal after work. I've got to say the steak was perfect. I always order medium rare and in a lot of restaurants it can be hit and miss. But it was perfect. My partners pie was delicious. Loved the Christmas decorations and ambience. Even though the manageress was on her own there was no fault in service. We will be back very soon.

Slow unattractive staff. Food was on this occasion acceptable. Incorrect order constantly asking what is ordered I don’t understand how places like this stay open they are lucky with the lack of competition in the area.

Good value lunch
Nice cosy pub with a real fire. Friendly service and good value pub grub cooked with pride. I can recommend the chicken breast in white wine sauce. Good atmosphere, home cooked food, lovely warm log fire. Would recommend. Excellent value Pool table and darts available.

Terrible Service
We tried to order food but was told they had stopped serving outside despite seeing people getting food. They were serving food inside though! This was only 18.15. Also they didn’t tell us before ordering drinks so we wasted £20 on drinks. Me and my baby came home with empty stomach. We will not be returning.

Would not recommend to anyone!
Booked a family meal for my sons birthday yesterday, what a disappointment. Some of the choices that our family ordered had run out, bearing in mind it was only 4.30pm, then some of the meals were under cooked. Next was the sweet course, no chocolate ice cream, someone ordered the lemon sorbet cheese cake and guess what no lemon sorbet left also they had run out of baileys for our coffee. It was a very disappointing evening and would never go again.

Thwaites has just lost another guest.
Arcane ruling that they cannot accept the Queens shilling after 11.30pm at the bar because they have cashed their till. Inflexible and totally worst service I have had in 25 years of Hotel Travel. Will give this a wide berth and their Sister Hotels.

Very disappointed. Not the hotel it used to be.
Most of staff were indifferent at best and miserable at worst. Had to chase tidying up and preparation of room every day. Public area toilets were in a poor state. Annoyed that a separate payment was required to use the pool in what is supposed to be a spa hotel. Service was slow. The hotel lacked any form of front of house leadership or motivation or support. Nothing made us feel like we would like to come to Cottons again

Awful food
Food was cold, didn't have what was on the menu and agreed for a substitute, which I could have cooked better myself. Oven chips, cold veg and just not nice.

I will never visit again
I was very disappointed with food I had the turkey off the special board and it was the worst turkey I have ever had the sprouts where undercooked the parsnips where hard and the roast potatoes where hard I got a little pot of gravy which was tasteless the pig in blankets where pink and a little ring of stuffing it all was disgusting and I wasn't the only one who complained about there food around the table one even complained that much they got there money back im not one too complain so didn't

What a disappointment it turned out to be.
Starters arrived and although not the best in the world were edible. 7 of the 8 mains arrived and people were waiting for the 8th before tucking in. However after 5 minutes or so, we had to chase the waiter for the outstanding meal. This arrived after a few more minutes on a stone cold plate with no apology whatsoever.

Extremely disappointing overall
From the time we made a reservation until we checked in, we were inundated with emails urging us to book a table in the restaurant. These marketing emails were sent via the booking site and there was no option to stop them. At check in, we were told that we could not have breakfast unless we made a reservation. Thankfully, we never did. When we saw the menu we understood the reason for the aggressive marketing tactics - the prices in the restaurant were extremely high.

Rip off, avoid at all coste
Absolute rip off!! Do not bother going, save your well earned money and go elsewhere. £10.45 for a pint of shandy and an orange and Lemonade. Absolutely scandalous. When I queried the cost, the bar tender looked sheepishly at the till, she knew it was overpriced and looked embarrassed. How a pub can charge those prices is ridiculous. In a city centre trendy bar I would expect that, not in a local pub.
